February 2, 2005

On January 29, Brian came to pick up Codi for a visit. We did not have scheduled visitation. Brian got Codi pretty much whenever he wanted her unless I already had plans for that weekend. He usually picked her up on Friday and brought her home on Sunday. This visit, however, he was keeping her until Wednesday, February 2 because my mom had a doctor appointment in St. Louis on February 2 and we thought it would be easier to let Brian keep her till after the appointment.
February 2 was a cold snowy day so mom cancelled her appointment because she and I both know how people drive in St. Louis when it snows. We went to the grocery store and came home. We no more got home and the groceries in the house when the phone rang. It was my step dad calling from work.
Brian had called him at work and told him that Codi was in the hospital. I got on the phone and my step dad told me what little he knew and gave me Brian's cell phone number.
I called Brian on mom's cell as she called school to let them know I would be there shortly to pick up my son.
Brian had been at school himself when he was notified that Codi was in the hospital and he told me that he had been told that Codi had taken a nap, woke up crying. She walked a little ways across the floor, went limp, and fell, hitting her head. She then had a seizure, and his girlfriend called an ambulance. I found out what hospital my baby was at and grabbed my keys and purse and went to get my son.

It was spitting snow and the roads were slick but I still drove 90 all the way to Eureka, where I got off the highway because as far as I knew, Codi was still at Jefferson Memorial in Crystal City. I called mom to find out where she and my step dad were and that's when I found out that Codi was being transferred to Children's in St. Louis. I also found out that she was completely unresponsive and that they had had to insert a breathing tube. I made an illegal u-turn and went around cars stopped at the stoplights to get back on the highway. Again, I did 90 all the way to Children's.

When I got to Children's, the ambulance hadn't gotten there yet and therefore they couldn't tell me much. I waited. Mom and my step dad got there about 15 minutes after I did and still no ambulance.

We decided to step outside and have a quick smoke while waiting for the blasted ambulance to get there with my baby. There really wasn't much else for us to do. We stood within the designated smoking area but where we could see the emergency entrance. While we were standing there we heard the ambulance pull in. We weren't sure it was her but then again it had to be.

Was she ok?? What happened?? All these questions and more were going through my mind ever since I got the call that she was in the hospital.
